"Millennials. Both the baby boomers and Gen Xers will one day
be passing the reins to the Millennials (also called Generation Y or the echo
boomers). Born between 1977 and 2000, these children of the baby boomers number
83 million, dwarfing the Gen Xers and larger even than the baby boomer segment.
This group includes several age cohorts: tweens (aged 9–12), teens (13–18), and
young adults (19–32). With total purchasing power of more than $733 billion,
the Millennials make up a huge and attractive market.”- Armstrong & Kotler
(2011). Marketing: An Introduction, 10th Ed. Prentice Hall Publishing pg. 74
I am a millennial, also known as Generation Y. My parents are baby boomers and I am an
eighties baby. According to a Yahoo
executive “All generations are comfortable with technology, but this is the
generation that’s been formed by technology,”- Armstrong & Kotler
(2011). Marketing: An Introduction, 10th Ed. Prentice Hall Publishing pg. 74, as a generation, this may be
true, but as an individual, I am the exception.
The same technology that “formed” my generation is the same technology I
can do without. Now don’t get me wrong,
I am very technological savvy and enjoy the many advances it has created in the
world, but I personally just don’t have much use for it. I just like to have a first hand
understanding of how everything works. "77 percent of Millennials frequent social networking sites and 71 percent use instant messaging."- Armstrong & Kotler
(2011). Marketing: An Introduction, 10th Ed. Prentice Hall Publishing pg. 74.
According to Armstrong and Kotler, Millennials are big social networkers and avid
web users. Although this statement may hold some truths, I have to disagree. I am an active web user, but I am not a social
networker. I like to use the Internet as
entertainment, to learn and as a form of communication. Emails are fine, but with the Internet I can
still have the face-to-face conversations with people I am so far away
from. I prefer that interaction with a
person to any form of communication, formal or non-formal. I feel like technology has made my generation
lazy. Other than depending on
technology, I can agree with me being a Millennial. MIllennials are known to seek out information
on a two-way level; simply stating opinions, is not enough. I like to research information and experience
things first hand. I like to answer the
question of why, more so than what, and the first answer is never enough. Before reading this chapter, I used to think
it was a trait I inherited from my father, but no I am just a Millennial; or
maybe of both? Either way, I am a
Millennial, better known as Generation Y, and there is nothing you can do about
it.
