Week 2 EOC "Boston Consulting Group: video games"

With the release of alternative gaming sources, mobile gaming is on the rise to becoming an interactive gaming experience and possibly reducing the need for any type of bulky gaming console.  Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Google Play, which support the Android play market, has created a need for reform of Sony’s PS3, Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s XBOX.  With games starting at 99 cents and even more being free, mobile gamers have made it a necessity for top video game companies to create a mobile version of their top selling games to secure a place in the emerging market of mobile gaming.  What about my handheld?  Referring to the Nintendo DS, 3DS, Sony Playstation’s PSP or maybe the Vita, handhelds might as well be considered a thing of the past.  Don’t forget about Nintendo’s Gameboy and Sega’s Gamegear, classics I must say, but classics to say the least.  As an ever growing, ever changing gaming market that lives for convenience, no one has the time or the want to carry around a device, its charging cord, gaming cartridges and its accessories.  Of course Wi-Fi has eliminated the need for some of the accessories when it comes to handhelds, but that is not enough.  With the ease to access interactive gaming on the same mobile device that allows for organization of one’s life, the need for a handheld gaming console has become obsolete.  “When comparing the behavior of gamers in 2012 vs. 2011, almost half of gamers said they are playing mobile games more this year than last year.” https://www.npd.com/wps/portal/npd/us/news/press-releases/close-to-one-quarter-of-app-gamers-only-play-on-mobile-devices/.  Creators of top video games, including Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., and Electronic Arts Inc., have noticed the increasing trend in mobile gaming and have taken steps to ensure they will keep a place in the growing market.  Releasing mobile versions of top sellers such as “Grand Theft Auto” and “Need for Speed” video game companies have created market share in this mature, growing industry.  Electronics Art’s “Need for Speed Most Wanted” mobile version launched the same day as the console product and was marked the first to do so.  According to the staff at Electronic Arts “It’s already topped the Apple App Store and Google Play top selling charts around the world since launch.”  - http://www.ea.com/news/ea-secures-editors-choice
